<p>The sustainable homes project explores the complex problem of sustainable housing.&nbsp; Financially and environmentally unsustainable homes:</p>



<ul>
<li>are damaging to human health; from damp and mold, to excessive cold and heat related deaths, to the anxiety of covering energy and repair bills</li>



<li>present a public health challenge; since March 2022 this has taken on elements of a public health crisis as the cost of both heating and food has climbed significantly impacting the poorest and most vulnerable in our societies</li>



<li>have an environmental footprint that is a significant proportion of global GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions, as does the manufacture of new homes and retrofitting of old homes</li>
</ul>



<p><strong>Primary Goals: Improving Democratic Decision Making</strong></p>



<p>The project aims to explore how simulations and their supporting tools might improve our societies’ democratic sense and decision making of complex problems.&nbsp; We hypothesize that engaging and realistic simulations can enable experts, and journalists to better communicate with citizens and policy makers.&nbsp; This democratization of expertise via simulations empowers citizens to better understand the invisible forces that determine how they can flourish in our societies within nature.&nbsp; Specifically:</p>



<ul>
<li>how such tools might act as mediums through which experts can more easily build coherence and consensus amongst themselves</li>



<li>the trust of citizens in this sense making process</li>



<li>the participation of citizens in understanding and solving complex problems</li>



<li>helping our citizens better understand the complex problems we collectively face, and make better decisions about these complex problems including deciding what to buy or not to buy, who to vote for, and why</li>



<li>complex problems also have unique qualities of being significantly dynamic and uncertain and the visualizations also aim to guide the general public and policy makers into understanding these qualities at intellectual and intuitive levels</li>
</ul>



<p><strong>Secondary Goals: Improve Homes and Housing Policy</strong></p>



<p>Simulations that facilitate a better understanding of what sustainable homes could be and making better decisions about them, should result in improving homes and thus the project also aims to:</p>



<ul>
<li>improve the health of occupants living in their homes via changes to their homes physical construction, or use</li>



<li>improve the financial and environmental sustainability of housing</li>
</ul>



<p><strong>Approach</strong></p>



<p>The sustainable homes project uses software tools CCI has built previously (<a href="https://centerofci.org/datacurator/" data-type="projects" data-id="2564">DataCurator</a>, Anot8, <a href="https://centerofci.org/mathesar/" data-type="projects" data-id="2351">Mathesar</a>) to support a custom interactive visualization / simulation together with the social and philosophical approaches CCI takes for engaging with the communities we aim to serve.</p>

<p>We extended previous studies on the impact of masks on COVID-19 outcomes by investigating an unprecedented breadth and depth of specifications, and our results demonstrate the policy implications for reinforcing the need to maintain and encourage mask-wearing by the public even after controlling for vaccination.</p>



<p>In this project, we show that mask mandates at the country-level (USA) had a significant positive effect on COVID outcomes (cases, hospitalizations and deaths), and that mask wearing (in 69 countries) similarly has a beneficial effect. This research was just published in the June issue of PLOS ONE, an open-access journal for multidisciplinary research in medicine and the sciences.</p>

<p>Policy plays a central role in complex systems. Even seemingly routine policy decisions ripple through a community’s healthcare, transportation, and environmental networks &#8211; and directly affect much more. Tracking the impact that different policies have can be an elusive task. Since 2020, our team has been experimenting with an exciting simulator that can measure and evaluate the link between high-level policy decisions and real-world outcomes in the realm of COVID-19.</p>



<ul>
<li>Using a policy simulator, our team compared COVID-19 outcomes in communities with and without mask mandates, and found that mask mandates led to better outcomes in terms of case numbers, hospitalizations, and deaths.</li>



<li>We are currently using our simulator to better understand COVID-19 outcome discrepancies across racial, gender, income, and age demographic groups.</li>



<li>We are also exploring how these discrepancies relate to mobility patterns and policies, including limited air travel and work-from-home mandates for non-essential workers.</li>
</ul>

<ol>
<li>Mitigation &#8211; climate interventions that reduce carbon (primarily) and other greenhouse gas emissions, either through reduction of production of emissions or through innovative techniques for emissions capture.</li>



<li>Adaptation &#8211; climate interventions that take an active role in improving robustness and resiliency of habitats and occupants (humans, animals, plant life, etc.) in the face of climate changes (e.g. sea-level rise) and extreme weather.</li>



<li>Geoengineering &#8211;  human-engineered interventions, typically at a global or large ecosystem level (e.g. solar radiation management via introduction of atmospheric aerosols), to control or influence the Earth-climate system with the goal of reducing negative climate change impacts. </li>
</ol>



<p>The map shows the actors and organizations that are leading climate change projects in these three areas, how the projects are funded, and how projects and actors relate to one another.</p>

<p>Chelsea, Massachusetts is a 2.21 square mile city close to Boston, has an estimated population of 55,000 and a population density of 16K/square mile. It is ranked 29th in the US for urban population density. More than 60% of Chelsea’s population identifies as Latino/Hispanic and has a median household income of $32,000. More than 80% of the people in this city are essential workers. At the start of the pandemic, Chelsea had some of the highest numbers of COVID cases in the state. Now, the city has the second highest vaccination rate in the state among cities with comparable demographics.</p>

<p>The Chelsea Project worked with the city government, nonprofits in Chelsea, and researchers at Mass General Hospital to deploy a community-led response to the COVID pandemic in Chelsea. The response involved three key elements:</p>



<ul><li>Implementing wastewater analysis, which can detect COVID-19 in sewage up to two weeks before infected individuals become symptomatic, to predict when and where spikes in COVID transmissions would occur. The Chelsea Project team collaborated with MGH researchers to determine the best locations for COVID testing sites based on the wastewater results. Wastewater analysis data provided the city government with an accurate view of the prevalence of COVID in the city.</li></ul>



<ul><li>Creating a network of community health promoters and training them to speak with residents about their concerns around COVID testing and vaccinations. The health promoters also directed residents to testing sites, registered residents for vaccination appointments, and connected them to other relevant resources. Finally, the promoters provided real-time data to the Chelsea Project team about general perceptions, concerns, and questions about COVID among city residents.</li></ul>

<ul><li>Devising a communication strategy to provide accurate information about COVID and rebuild trust with residents. The Chelsea Project team created videos of leaders in the community (a priest, a local doctor, a Chelsea business owner) speaking directly to residents about COVID and why they should get vaccinated. The promoters release 3-5 TikTok videos per week to encourage COVID testing and vaccinations and to address misconceptions about the virus.</li></ul>



<p>Our experience in Chelsea has demonstrated that public health is about more than just testing &#8211; it is affected by housing, food availability, and economic opportunities as well. By connecting the city with wastewater testing technology and working with the city and local nonprofits to develop the community health promoters program, CCI is building infrastructure that will operate beyond the COVID pandemic.</p>

<p>Data is messy, and the more types of data you need the messier it gets. DataCurator helps you to understand complex problems by breaking down large, disparate, and overlapping sets of information into modular component parts.</p>



<p>Navigating a complex system requires gathering and interpreting a variety of data from a diverse range of sources: quantitative and qualitative data from different kinds of surveys and studies, research and insights from numerous experts in different fields, sets of goals and priorities from different stakeholders.</p>



<p>DataCurator allows you to build a usable, shareable model of a complex system to help you organize successful interventions.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How does it work?</h2>



<p>DataCurator visualizes connections between different types of data. You can put all your different types of information into one place, then isolate certain components and identify relationships and patterns across the full range of data.&nbsp;</p>



<p>There are two dimensions of time built into the tool: one that lets you track your time within the tool itself, allowing you to check what you did when; and one that lets you plan interventions at simulated timescales.</p>



<p>DataCurator allows you to plan for the uncertainty built into potential interventions. Uncertainty is inherent to complex systems: numbers may be inaccurate, people may behave differently than expected, circumstances can change rapidly. Planning a successful intervention requires accounting for various potential outcomes. With DataCurator you can enter a potential event in the simulated timescale of your planned intervention, then assign uncertainty to specific values.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For example, you might say that if a positive test rate is at or below 3% it&#8217;s not a problem, but if it gets above that level different scenarios emerge.</p>



<p>DataCurator aims to facilitate and encourage more precise and systematic recording of all the key elements we use to create models: the definitions, statuses, processes, assumptions, and imagined potential outcomes, based on all the information you have.</p>

<p>DataCurator is for anyone trying to understand a complex system and intervene in it, who has a lot of information to understand and interpret.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Effective interventions to complex problems are often buried within data. Mathesar simplifies the process of collaboratively maintaining complex data sets and gleaning useful information from them.</p>

<li>Unlike a spreadsheet, Mathesar keeps your data structured and clean. It embraces relational data, allowing you to accurately model complex structures through simple relationships.</li>



<li>Unlike a database, Mathesar&#8217;s intuitive interface lets you get started editing your data quickly and continues to help you evolve the structure of your data as your needs change.</li>



<li>Unlike similar spreadsheet-database hybrid tools, Mathesar stores all its data in a PostgreSQL database with exactly the same structure shown to the user, including primary keys, foreign keys, types, and constraints. This approach keeps your data maximally interoperable, and even makes it possible to work with the same data in other tools outside Mathesar.&nbsp; You can also host your own Mathesar installation too, giving you ownership, privacy, and control of your data.</li>
